I ❤ Bicycles

The New Golf

Posted in | »

A few weeks ago my pal, Cameron,  astutely pointed out that cycling is the new golf.

As a lifelong cyclist who has a rabid aversion to just about all games involving hitting, kicking and catching balls of any kind. I tried hard not to be offended. Yet I cannot shake the idea and I am beginning to think he could be right.

As an avid follower of anti-fashion this does not mean I now have to give up cycling and take up mountain boarding to stay ahead of the curve. No, I don't need to cos I am a theoretical Rat Biker. Well maybe not entirely theoretical I have always ridden a motley collection of bike parts and prided myself on my improvistational bike repair skills.

To fit into my newly chosen sub cult of Rat Bikeism I will up the ante.
Which is why I am going to start work on a bamboo-rolling-tall-bike with a flame thrower.

Morning ride

Posted in | »

Em and I pedaled over to Toormina to get some coffee this morning. On the way we did a circuit of the velodrome.

KMX Kid

Posted in | »

I simply could not resist. Alistair from Ventoux cycles offered me the KMX Kart for such a low price. Then Em offered to pay almost half of it out of his own savings. It is too big for Em and too small for me but I had to buy it. Perhaps I can cut my legs of at the knees or maybe I can feed Em some super-protein-grow-powder.

Em manages to ride it despite the size and he loves it. Cheri is away studying for the next few days so hopefully we won't be in too much trouble when she gets back.

Cycling in Alexandria, Egypt

Posted in | »

Back in 1990 weeks before George Bush senior started chucking bombs at Iraq, I spent a Christmas in Alexandria, Egypt. The Egyptians I met were a lovely bunch. Everybody was kind and polite, the people I chatted with around town were interested in where I came from, my family and my plans.

My First Bike

Posted in | »

I loved my first bicycle. After it rusted apart and my Pa threw it out I went with my brothers to the dump and found the front half of it. That is the front wheel attached to the handlebar and forks. I used to run around pretending it was a motorbike or lawnmower or spaceship.

Nothing's changed much.

On a rainy day

Posted in | »

On a rainy day I miss pedaling my bicycle to work. So what better way to shrug off the lack of a nice cycle ride than to watch Calum Stirling's refreshing (if slightly pretentious) video, Double Diamond

Ride to Work Day

Posted in | »

Today was Ride to Work Day. So Cameron and I pedaled off this morning and joined the throng. We found ourselves next to Rodney Degens the Coffs Council Greens Councillor. What a lovely fellow. We had some snatches of conversation over a little breakfast but were interrupted by the bustle and noise of the morning. Hopefully we'll bump into each other again sometime.

Cycling Round Australia

Posted in | »

I rode to work this morning with John and Cameron. I would have liked to continue on up the coast with John but had already promised to do a spot of work today.

John Knox is pedaling around Australia on a mission to save the world so that his kids can have a future. I tend to agree with him so I encourage you to sign his petition.

In other news...

We have recently returned from the Unschooling Retreat on the Gold Coast. A bit of a disappointment for me apart from getting to see a rather exciting tussle between two lizards who thwacked each other with their tails. Oh and a rather nice poster of a lady on a bike advertising booze.
Gel has been delivered to Bundagen commune for a spot of WWOOFing. I expect we shall hear more from him before he pedals off down south on his recycled recumbent.

The hump day post

Posted in | »

Here I am sitting down for Dinner. Gel has cooked a great pumpkin soup, Em is trying to inveigle us into playing "Dangerous Boys". I'm rudely uploading photos....

Some pics of Em, Jimmy, a crab, Nicole, Emma and me at Macauleys from Monday. Some more of Gel, Jay and The Bike. Oh and a classic shot of Ev laying in the sun with teabags on his eyes... !? It's a tough life for some hey?

And here they are.
